How to fix old windows that won't stay up
To be fair, some window issues can be fixed with some simple DIY solutions. Here’s how to fix old windows that won’t stay up, which you can try before calling an expert:
Step 1. Get your tools
Before we get started on how to fix windows that won’t stay open, you first need the right tools. For a damaged window balance, you’ll just need a flathead screwdriver to remove the sash.
Step 2. Unclip the affected sash
Next, close the window properly and look for the metal clips on each side of the jamb. Simply pry these clips up using a flathead screwdriver to release the sash.
After that, you can pull the sash all the way up, then wiggle it to one side to get it off the tracks. You should be able to pull out the whole window sash after this. Do it as gently as possible to avoid damaging the glass pane.
Step 3. Check the balance
Set the window aside and look for the sash balance, one on each side of the window. It looks like a metal bar that contains the spring and string inside. Most of the time, a damaged balance is the main reason why a single or double-hung window stops staying in place.
The metal clips you pry earlier hold these balances in place. And since you’ve lifted the clips up, you can easily remove the balance to check it.
For this, you should look inside the window balance to check if the spring or string is broken. If so, you need to replace both balances.

Step 4. Get the replacement parts
